FAQ

Who makes my jewelry?

Quite simply: me. Hi, I'm Sloane. I design, craft, and mail each and every Theodore Sloane piece. Theodore is the canine sidekick of the brand, but he sadly doesn't really pull his weight when it comes to the business.

Each piece starts as an idea here in Boston, MA. I then prototype the design in metal or wax. From there, I craft each metal piece in-house, and for wax cast pieces I partner with a nearby casting house to cast my pieces into metal. The resulting raw castings are then refined and polished by hand in my studio, and finally lovingly packaged to be shipped to you.

Why doesn't my order ship right away?

As a self-funded small business, Theodore Sloane operates on a “made to order” model, which means I start making your jewelry after you place your order. Production typically takes one to two weeks. For wax casts pieces it can take up to three weeks.

Please contact me if you need an item by a specific date and I'll do my best to make it happen!

What is bronze, brass or gold fill?

I get this question a lot from customers and have a special page dedicated to explaining their differences. In a nutshell, I choose to work with solid metals that are not plated. Plated gold and plated silver may look nice when new, but they'll wear off unevenly over the course of a few months. Solid metals, while they may tarnish, can be brought back to an even shine with a simple jewelry cloth. And I pack one into each and every order.

Do you work with recycled metals?

Yes! Respecting and protecting the environment with sustainable and low-impact practices is one of the most important things to me when it comes to running this small business. All of my sterling silver and solid gold is 100% recycled, and while gold fill is not recyclable, making my pieces to order minimizes waste.

How can I determine my ring size? And if I order the wrong size, can you help me re-size my ring?

The most accurate way to determine your size is to visit a local jewelry shop. An alternative is to tie a string around your finger, cut it and then measure its length in millimeters. From there a simple Google search will have you covered.

Should you order the wrong ring size from us, we offer complimentary re-sizing. You will only be responsible for shipping costs.

How do I clean my tarnished jewelry?

When exposed to moisture, chemicals, dirt and sweat, silver, brass, and bronze jewelry may darken through a process called oxidation. The best way to clean it is to buff with a piece of polishing cloth. A DIY solution is to mix some lemon juice with water and let your jewelry soak for 10 to 20 minutes. The acidic content of the lemon will help remove any tarnish buildup. If you’re in a hurry, a dollop of ketchup will also do the trick.

Where can I shop your jewelry in person?

I bring Theodore Sloane to pop-ups around Boston whenever possible, especially around the holidays. I announce the times and locations on Instagram, so stay tuned!

How often do you release new designs?

I wholeheartedly believe that jewelry should be a timeless investment. As such, I don’t strictly follow the typical fashion calendar. I loosely follow the seasons, but I release new designs as inspirations strike. This is my way of ensuring that I am thoughtful with my intentions and process, making jewelry that you will love for a long time to come.

What advice do you have for other aspiring artists and entrepreneurs?

Do something everyday that helps you move forward, however small of a step it may be. Stop fixating on that big, hairy goal of “launching a business” or “becoming a full time artist.” It’s so intimidating that it can very well choke off all your creative instincts. We do our best work and learn the most when we operate from a place of curiosity and passion, rather than fear and stress.
